Conference Call : How to participate in a crowdfunding campaign - June 1 at 2pm EST

This free telephone conference call will describe why and how one participates in a crowdfunding campaign. We will discuss a specific campaign, currently seeking donations on Blackcrowdfunding.net, the Charles Junction Community Gardens

Charles Garden trains and equips people within the community to grow whole fresh foods for themselves and to sell their home grown produce for economic empowerment. Funding will be used to train the unemployed to grow and produce whole foods for themselves and their families. Contributions are tax deductible." 

Dorothy Pitman Hughes, the creator of this crowdfunding campaign, will be on the call to answer questions. Ms. Hughes was a co-founder (with Gloria Steinem, left) of Ms. Magazine. We will also discuss how to make a contribution on Blackcrowdfunding.net

Crowdfunding Accounting 101 - Revenue Recognition in Crowdfunding

A start-up using crowd funding to create a product is different from a normal company. The start-up has cash inflows from donations but does not have a product, yet. In this situation, we recommend using completed-contract method to recognize revenue. Under this way of thinking, we assume the start-up is akin to a project or a long-term contract. The crowdfunding company will find it difficult to estimate the revenue from crowdfunders and, hence, the cost of rewards or perks. Under International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and GAAP guidelines, if the firm cannot reliably measure the outcome of the project, revenue should be recognized based on contract costs. These costs should be expensed when incurred. Profit is recognized only at the completion of the project.
